Longterm monitoring
Autonomous recording of bat calls for long periods
Many surveys can profit well from long-term monitoring of activity. The batcorder 3.1 or the GSM-batcorder are placed in a plastic box for weather protection usually in greater height for better area coverage. It then records activity for weeks or months, depending on your needs. Using the optional solar panel no extra energy source is needed. In addition the control module (batcorder 3.1) or the GSM-batcorder itself sends a status message per SMS (SIM card needed). This gives information on memory, battery and microphone condition. This is one of the features invented by ecoObs more than 15 years ago.
The continuous sampling over long periods of time results in a very good data source for evaluation of bat activity in relation to weather or time of year. This allows to formulate much better conservation startegies. Quantitative as well as qualitative analysis help to interpret such immense data.
Our solutions
We created the box-extension for long-term monitoring. The box-extension can be used as batcorder 3.1 with Box-Erweiterung as well as GSM-batcorder with Box-Erweiterung.
Both products share some common features. Both regularly test microphone sensitivity (TSL) and store the tests as recordings. Each morning a SMS message including information on free and used memory space, recordings last nights, minimum temperature, battery status and microphone status are sent. In both cases a lead-gel battery (6V) is used as power source that is built into the box together with the batcorder. Using the optional solar panel runtimes of up to 365 days can be reached (depending on sun at location and actual temperature). A temperature sensor built into the disc microphone sends temperature values each 15 minutes.
